STORYLINE:

An eyewitness recounted the moment he saw a small plane crash in Croatia's Istria peninsula on Thursday, killing at least four people.

"We saw that plane, somewhere south from the airfield towards the sea, maybe flying at some 300 meters altitude. All of a sudden it started turning to left, taking a spiral dive," witness Nijaz Delic said.

"During its second spiral turn, it was trying to level the plane, but it failed to level the angle of the plane and it fell somewhere in this forest behind and what happened, happened," he added.

The plane had crashed near Medulin, a town on the peninsula, a statement said.

The official HINA news agency reported that it was a German plane that took off from Austria.

It was unknown how many people were on the aircraft.

No other details were immediately available.
